Students Create Innovative App to Track Carbon and Inspire Action
In 2022, Hasnain, Humza, Sohidul and Mahdi from Challney High School for Boys took part in our Innovate for Climate Change course when they were 12 and 13 years old. They entered our 2022 Showcase with their app Carbon GPS, which aimed to empower users to track carbon emissions and make more sustainable choices.
Carbon GPS was designed to be accessible to anyone, anywhere. It featured tools such as barcode scanners, reminders, challenges, and leaderboards to help users monitor and reduce their environmental footprint. The team championed the belief that “small changes can make a big difference”, aiming to offer practical, everyday tools for climate-conscious decision-making.
The app encouraged positive habits by making tracking engaging and community-driven. Users were able to log activities like recycling efforts or travel choices, compete with peers, and stay motivated with challenges. By bringing social elements and gamification into carbon-tracking, Carbon GPS turned a complex issue something much more appealing to young people.
The app was awarded the People’s Choice Award that year, demonstrating the team’s ability to connect with real-world concerns and offer tangible solutions.
Through this project, the students gained valuable skills in app design, problem-solving, and sustainability thinking. They said, "Our experience in the Apps for Good course has been amazing, and it has given us a greater understanding of how life works and a great opportunity to help with team building, coding and presentation skills..."
