Syeda and Shikha's Story

How Innovate for Climate Change Inspired Students to Explore Technology Careers
In 2024, Syeda and Shikha from Levenshulme High School for Girls took part in Apps for Good’s Innovate for Climate Change course, aged 14 and 13 years old. They entered our 2024 Showcase as Team ‘FoodPrint’, and designed an app to reduce food miles by providing locally sourced meal kits. Their innovative approach earned them Judge’s Favourite in the Systems Thinkers category, supported by Spotify.
Neither student described themselves as passionate about technology before taking part in Apps for Good. They viewed the course as an interesting challenge, but not necessarily a first step toward tech careers. However, the experience of researching, designing, and pitching their app broadened their perspectives and showed them how technology could shape their future aspirations.
The course opened their eyes to technology related careers. Before Apps for Good, they were interested in careers in medicine and law and both said they were interested in exploring opportunities involving technology within these fields following the course. They said, “We’re keen to explore careers in technology and we’ll both be considering more technology-based options in the future.”
A highlight for both was pitching FoodPrint to a panel of industry judges. They felt proud following the pitch, and agreed that they enjoyed the presentation and answering questions about their app.
