How Apps for Good Impacted One Alum’s Education Experience

Zakariya (Zak) Miah, now a law student and education campaigner, first became involved with Apps for Good in Year 8 at Challney High School for Boys. He took part in the course as an extracurricular activity and created an app called ‘RxCare’, designed to help users find suitable care homes. After completing the course, Zak continued to support younger students and went on to join the Apps for Good Youth Advisory Board.

Before Apps for Good, Zak was a shy student who often stayed in his comfort zone. His form tutor encouraged him to try new things, and Apps for Good was the first opportunity that truly sparked his interest. The combination of logical reasoning and real-world problem solving gave him a new perspective on learning.

The course was Zak’s first real insight into the professional world. He spoke with people from different industries and realised how skills developed in the classroom could be applied in real life. This experience influenced his subject choices and encouraged him to take on further extracurricular opportunities.

Zak credits Apps for Good with building key skills that are now crucial in his legal studies such as persuasion, collaboration, and organisation.

Zak says of Apps for Good, “One thing I remember from Apps for Good is that I never had to spend money to feel involved. I will always remember that... It’s always been accessible… All you have to do is show up and put in your idea.”
