Championing Student Innovation at West Bromwich Collegiate Academy

In 2025, West Bromwich Collegiate Academy was named our School of the Year in recognition of their inspiring student projects, whole-school engagement, and commitment to empowering young people through purposeful technology learning.

The school has integrated our App for Social Action course across multiple year groups and classrooms over several years. Their students regularly produce standout submissions for our annual Showcase, and the school plays an active role in shaping our courses by providing thoughtful feedback and insights.

Before Apps for Good, the school was seeking a more meaningful, engaging way to teach computing aligned with their ethos of “Being Decent” and focused on real-world impact. They found what they were looking for through Apps for Good. Students became more focused and enthusiastic, especially when working on app projects that addressed causes they cared about. Teachers observed a clear boost in student confidence, digital creativity, and collaboration skills.

The programme has helped students, especially those who may not thrive in traditional academic settings, develop workplace-ready skills such as presentations, teamwork, evaluation, and adaptability. Industry engagement, including presenting to experts from companies like LEGO, gave students confidence and exposure to opportunities they may not have otherwise had.

Zoe said, “Our Academy believes that our students can be the equal of any students across the country, and Apps for Good is one way we can help our students to realise this.”
