With the help of Deutsche Bank’s Born to Be youth engagement strategy, we’re delivering courses that empower students to become change-makers in their communities. We’ve adapted our approach to reach young people learning from home.

I felt nervous about the idea of industry professionals viewing our work but I did like the fact they pointed out features they liked as well as giving constructive feedback to improve it.”

Creative technology workshops while learning from home

On 22nd and 25th February 2021, Apps for Good facilitators delivered our Design an App in a Day course to 17 students aged 16 to 18 from Chichester College Group, all learning from home.

In the workshop, students got to grips with the fundamentals of app development, understanding the tech design process whilst scoping and building an MVP of their own apps using App Lab.

Volunteers from Deutsche Bank joined at points during the session, giving students feedback on their products and sharing their career journeys. Students used Apps for Good’s online Expert Feedback Tool to receive further input on their projects from industry professionals and continue their learning beyond the session.

Creating opportunities for young people

"I’m not really nervous, just looking forward to learning new stuff." Student, Chichester College Group

Students need these opportunities more than ever. The Covid-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted young people, particularly those from disadvantaged communities. Young people are missing out on learning, skill development and access to opportunities.

The students from this session are all completing IT T Levels, which includes a 45 day minimum industry placement; however, due to the pandemic students have not yet been able to partake in their placements. Our workshop gave students an insight into the industry and the opportunity to hear from Industry Experts about their own careers.

Empowering the next generation

"The people running the event were very friendly and understanding. The activities were fun and engaging, I’d love to do it again." Student, Chichester College Group

Student projects from the session included apps to support students experiencing stress from exams and to raise awareness about racism.
