Apps for Good really is a highlight of our year, our young people love it! ”

Who is Dunoon Grammar School?

Dunoon Grammar School is in a beautiful coastal location in Argyll and Bute in the west of Scotland. They are a mixed comprehensive school who teach approximately 660 students of all abilities aged 12-18.

What has their Apps for Good journey been like?

They have been delivering a variety of Apps for Good courses since September 2015 including our App Development, Internet of Things and our Machine Learning courses.

The students at Dunoon Grammar School have had tremendous success at the Apps for Good Awards and have made it to the finals in 4 consecutive years from 2017-2020. They have had four teams win, with their most recent victory being in the 2020 Awards when EpicPen won our Future Technologist category which was supported by BNY Mellon.

What has been our highlight of working with them?

Our highlight of working with them has been their journey throughout the 2019/2020 academic year. They began the year delivering our Internet of Things course to all of their S1 cohort and our Machine Learning course to their S3 Computer Science students. In February they brought three teams to our Edinburgh event where students from five Scottish schools pitched their ideas to BNY Mellon employees with the hope of winning a place in the 2020 Awards final.

All the teams were extremely prepared but team EpicPen from Dunoon were successful in winning the place in the final. After the event they worked tirelessly with Paul Gallanagh between February and May to ensure their concept was as developed as possible.

This was extremely challenging, as students were at home and could only communicate with each other and Paul over either email or video conferencing, however they navigated this maturely and professionally. The team received the ultimate recognition when BNY Mellon selected them as winners of the Future Technologist category, ending a very unusual year of Apps for Good with well deserved victory.

When reflecting on the Edinburgh event, Paul said: ‘It really is a highlight of our year, our young people love it! – we really can’t thank you enough.Team Epicpen were delighted with their success and our other two teams are really grateful for the feedback.’

Thank you to Dunoon Grammar School for all of their fantastic work bring Apps for Good to their students over the years!
