What is your product and who is it for?

An app for the quick identification of sepsis, for primary care providers and caregivers.

What inspired your idea, and why is it important to you?

We were inspired by the NHS as they have a similar system, but it isn't very efficient and attempts diagnoses of all conditions, not just sepsis. Ruling out sepsis should be a first step - then the more granular identification tools can be used at a slower and more accurate pace.

How does your product solve the problem?

It provides a quick and easy, automated version of a standard sepsis symptoms list - making it easier for sepsis to be diagnosed quicker. Sepsis treatment relies heavily on speed of diagnosis (the faster the diagnosis the more effective the treatment, generally) and so this app assists in that.

How does it work?

The app provides a series of multiple-choice questions which are presented to the user, based on the official NHS guidance for the symptoms of sepsis. The responses to these questions are then parsed and scored, to provide further guidance to the user, such as ‘call 111’ etc. It acts as a front line before the human response.

Why vote for SEPSIS: Identifier?

A lot of effort has been put in! While it is in a prototype stage, there’s still a lot of code that provides a good starting point for expanding upon this idea. Furthermore, while our app is less exotic than some others, it has the potential to make a key difference in a commonly accessed area.
