What is your product and who is it for?

Our product is an app called Recycling Earth Hero. It is designed to get people recycling more and recycling in a way that avoids contamination. Contamination could lead to recycled goods being disposed of in landfill.

What inspired your idea, and why is it important to you?

We felt that recycling is something that everyone could do and as such could have the biggest impact in reducing climate change.

How does your product solve the problem?

It ensures that everyone recycles as much as possible and limits the amount of waste in landfill.

How does it work?

Users scan the barcode on the item using the app which then registers what the product is and tells you how to recycle it. Recycling is encouraged by points given for recycling and these can be traded in for rewards, e.g. vouchers to shop.

The AI supports the users in learning how to recycle and accrue points. Our app uses AI to identify the recycling rules for each area and decides how different parts of the product are disposed of, i.e. which parts can be recycled. It also calculates the rewards that can be earned from the points gained through recycling and links to local shops who supply the reward vouchers. The app also answers questions about recycling to help to maximise recycling.

We think that our app is very effective in encouraging recycling and we have planned how to reach our target market, e.g. by being able to download the app from the local council recycling web page. We think that a good app will not be used if no one knows about it. We also have plans to include forthcoming legislation about recycling within our app which means that it will be relevant in the future too.
