What is your product and who is it for?

Our product is an app that helps teenagers to rediscover the love of reading that they experienced as a younger child.

What inspired your idea, and why is it important to you?

We were inspired by the thousands of children across the world that stop reading as they reach secondary school, and want to help these children experience the various benefits reading has to offer. We noticed the learning benefits felt by users of the popular app Duolingo while learning languages, and thought we could do a similar thing for reading, inspiring our reading streak feature.

How does your product solve the problem?

It gives teens a reason to read again, creating a fun hobby that does them a lot of good in the short and long term. Reading is shown to support mental health, increasing wellbeing while reducing the chance of anxiety and depression, as well as significantly boosting grades in multiple subjects, but most prominently English, due to the exposure to a wider vocabulary and grammatically accurate sentences. Furthermore, reading is a much better habit to get into than many of the other phone-based activities young people do today.

How does it work?

The app has a range of features including a reading streak built by daily reading sessions that the user can customize as they wish; a selection of books the user can add to their personal library; and a social feature for comparing streaks and libraries with other users.

All of these work to make reading personal and specific to the reader while trying to build a positive habit of frequent reading.
