What is AI for Good 2.0?

AI for Good 2.0 is a free, project-based AI course where students design and build AI-powered apps to solve real-world problems. It has been redesigned to better support teachers in classroom delivery, with flexible modules, improved teaching resources, and pathways for both coding and AI assisted (vibe) coding.

Why has the course been updated?

AI for Good 2.0 has been shaped by rapid changes in technology, the realities of today’s classrooms, and extensive feedback from teachers and students across our courses. Teachers told us they needed more flexibility, simpler delivery, and resources that better fit real curriculum time and different school contexts.

Is AI for Good 2.0 still free?

Yes. AI for Good 2.0 is completely free for all schools, youth organisations, and home educators. We simply ask for feedback in return to help us evidence our impact to funders and keep the course free.

What will students do in the course?

Students explore AI safety and ethics, including bias, deepfakes, and responsible use of technology. They design and build AI-powered apps that solve real-world problems they care about. Industry engagement is embedded throughout the course, culminating in an annual Showcase - a celebration where students present and “launch” their apps to industry audiences.

Do I need to be a computing specialist to teach AI for Good 2.0?

No. AI for Good 2.0 is designed for both specialist and non-specialist teachers. It includes clear lesson structure, step-by-step resources, and teacher support to make delivery straightforward and accessible.

What are the coding and vibe coding pathways?

AI for Good 2.0 has two student-led pathways within a single course, so teachers deliver the same course regardless of route. The coding pathway uses JavaScript to build AI-powered apps, while the vibe coding pathway uses Canva Code and structured prompting to create working apps without coding. Both pathways lead to the same learning outcomes.

How flexible is AI for Good 2.0?

AI for Good 2.0 is fully modular and designed to fit any school context. We recommend delivering the full 12 lessons to get the most out of the course, but teachers can also select individual modules depending on available curriculum time. The course could be delivered in lessons, enrichment time, drop-down days, or extracurricular clubs.

I already deliver Innovate for Climate Change/App for Social Action. Why switch?

Technology for social and climate action is still at the heart of Apps for Good - that hasn’t changed. In fact, it’s now more important than ever.

With AI becoming increasingly relevant in young people’s lives and the realities of AI in the workplace, we’ve evolved the programme to bring these themes together in one updated course: AI for Good 2.0. Rather than offering three separate courses, the new course combines social action, climate change and AI, with “AI for good” embedded throughout.

For example:

Module 1 introduces students to AI ethics, bias and machine learning.

Module 2 explores the positive and negative environmental impacts of AI, using a recycling app as a real-world example.

We’ve also kept much of the inspiring climate change and social action content from the current courses, encouraging students to continue designing apps that make a positive to their own lives and communities.

Will the current courses still be available and updated?

From August 2026, Innovate for Climate Change, App for Social Action and the original AI for Good will no longer be available to new schools via the Apps for Good website, and will no longer be maintained and updated by Apps for Good.

Can students still enter Showcase and participate in Industry Engagement if we continue delivering older courses next year?

Of course! We’d love to see your student entries in Showcase 2027 and encourage you to continue requesting Industry Engagement to give your learners the most impactful experience of Apps for Good.

What support is available for teachers?

Teachers have access to a range of support resources, including downloadable lesson slides, ready-to-use classroom materials, student worksheets, and bite-sized CPD. These are designed to reduce workload and support confident delivery.

Do students need to use a specific type of device to complete AI for Good 2.0?

The software is mainly browser-based, so schools do not need specialist computers or installed programs. Students can access AI for Good 2.0 on any device - whether that’s a PC, a Mac, a laptop, a Chromebook, a tablet or an iPad. Even the resources to support Showcase entries have guides for different devices!

Can I deliver the course without using JavaScript and/or Canva Code if I prefer an alternative coding environment?

The course and its resources are specifically designed to support delivery using either Canva Code or JavaScript, so we’d strongly recommend these coding environments, especially if you’re a non-specialist computing teacher. However, if you’re confident in using alternative coding environments, you can.

Why is AI for Good 2.0 12 lessons long instead of 7-8 lessons in recent courses?

We consulted with teachers who agreed that in order to provide students with a thorough understanding of how AI works, the impact it can have and how to use it responsibly, the course needed to be longer.

AI for Good 2.0 has been designed for flexible modular delivery, and we recommend you teach all 12 lessons for maximum educational value. However, the 12 lessons span three core modules, so you can choose to flex your delivery based on the prior knowledge of your students and the computing time you have available. You may also consider teaching module one (Responsible AI Citizens) in another curriculum area, for example in tutor time or PSHE, in a similar way to how digital literacy will span across the new national curriculum.

How is this course safe for my students to use?

This course teaches students to understand, question and use artificial intelligence responsibly. Students do not receive unrestricted access to a public AI chatbot and no personal data is needed in AI activities. Instead, AI is used in specific, curriculum-focused activities with clear learning purposes, time limits and teacher supervision.

Throughout the course, students discuss the effects of AI, investigate issues such as bias, deepfakes and data privacy, design solutions and develop practical digital skills. AI is presented as a tool whose outputs must be questioned and checked - not as a person, an authority or a replacement for students’ own thinking.

The course should be delivered alongside the school’s existing safeguarding, data-protection, filtering and monitoring, acceptable-use and AI policies. Schools should complete their usual checks and approval processes for Canva Education and any teacher-operated LLM before beginning the course.

The curriculum is changing. Is the course future proofed?

The government has said that the revised Computing curriculum will place more emphasis on digital literacy, AI literacy, data and bias, while keeping important computer science content such as programming and algorithms. It also plans to replace the current Computer Science GCSE with a broader Computing GCSE. These are all areas that students begin to explore through AI for Good 2.0.

The final revised National Curriculum is expected in spring 2027, with schools beginning to teach it from September 2028. AI for Good 2.0 therefore gives schools a way to start developing this wider Computing knowledge now, without needing to wait for the new curriculum to be introduced.
